Impact of ankyloglossia on the language development of children

Objective: Ankyloglossia is a benign anomaly of the tongue which may cause functional limitation. Evidence regarding impact ofankyloglossia on children’s language development limited. We aimed to evaluate children born withankyloglossia.Patients and Methods: Children diagnosed with ankyloglossia were followed up prospectively. Demographic characteristics, degreeof assessed by Hazelbaker score in infancy its effects breastfeeding evaluated. Language wastested Turkish version Test Early Development-Third Edition Denver II at 3-5 years age.Results: Out 53 ankyloglossia, 38 (71.7%) had testing included intothe study. Significant was detected 10 these (26.3%). Median time exclusively breastfeedingwas not different according severity ankyloglossia. All evaluated developmentally normalin all domains. Scores between withoutsignificant ankyloglossia.Conclusion: Long term adversely affected. Parents should beappropriately informed efforts must be paid prevent unnecessary surgical interventions concerning delay.
